This fall, jeans are coming in all shapes and sizes, including skinny, boot-cut, and we are even seeing the return of the long lost 'flared' jean. Know Your Jeans

We all recognize certain denim brands, but what do we really know about the history behind various designer jeans? This week we are going to highlight one of our favorite brands:

Kasil Jeans

Kasil's head designer David Lim studied fine arts in San Francisco and has used his background to create an innovative line of top quality denim. Kasil's denim fabric comes from mills in the U.S., Italy, Japan, and Canada. The brand has always been focused on providing it's customers with quality jeans that are simple but have a customized feel.

When describing how Kasil's compare to other designer jeans Lim said,

"What seems to be happening now is brands are trying to out do each other with bells and whistles to draw attention to their product. Beyond just a pair of pants...

Even before the days when nothing came between Brook Shields and her Calvins, certain “denim icons” made their way into the minds of American consumers. James Dean became the epitome of the all American bad boy, donning a rugged pair of Levi’s in “Rebel Without a Cause”. With Sonny by her side, Cher sang her way to fame in a pair of denim bell bottoms. A southern girl in a pair of short denim cutoffs led to the now infamous ‘Daisy Dukes’ (no we are not talking Jessica Simpson), and John Bonjovi at his prime was never seen without larger than life hair and tight pair of a acid wash jeans.

Even today, celebrities have kept the denim trend alive, and although there have been some missteps along the way (think Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears at the Grammy's in matching denim outfits…) for the most part, throughout Hollywood's history, stars have gotten the denim look down. Men's Fashion Week has just come to an end in Milan and one of the most surprising trends for the upcoming season borrowed from something that has been around in women's fashion for a while...jeggings. It's true that there are some styles men and women can both sport, but here at Citizen Blues, we're not sure this should be one of them.

Designers like Versace, Burberry, and Armani sent men down the runway in everything from leather to snakeskin jeggings, furthering the "skinny jean" craze that has been uniting hipsters across the world for quite some time.

Sorry for the brief hiatus, but we're back and ready to head right into summer here at Citizen Blues. It's always hard to figure out where to fit denim into your summer wardrobe, but here are a few suggestions to keep you looking cool as it starts to get hot.

Denim was every where on the Spring 2010 Fashion Week runways. Designers like Stella McCartney and Dolce and Gabana showed us the versatility of denim. It really can be adapted to help you look great no matter what your summer plans are.

It's a classic and manly style that has been around throughout the years - plaid shirts with denim. Once worn only on the worksite, designers have integrated the plaid shirt and modernized the fit for a high-end, stylish look. Denim Trend - Jean Shorts with Tights

As I was flipping through my Holiday J.Crew magazine I kept seeing the models in jean shorts with tights. It looked great on the models, but would I really wear this trend? Would you wear this trend? What do you think about jean shorts with tights?

My take: I actually kind of like it! I think it's a style not everyone can pull off, but if you have good legs and look good in shorter jean shorts - try it!

STYLE TIP: Jean shorts look best with a thicker tight, such as wool tights. I would stay away from sheer tights, unless they are black.

As I've been out shopping for the Holidays I've noticed a lot of thigh-high boots for sale. What do you think about this trend? It definitely looks warm, but I don't think it's a very flattering style. I think it draws attention to the upper thighs, which for most women is not their favorite feature.

Stella McCartney showed her Spring/Summer line for 2010 and the collection included some denim pieces, such as the denim skirt shown above. This skirt is definitely reminiscent of the late 70's, early 80's. What do you think about this look - LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

I'll tell you what I think - I actually hate it. While denim skirts are still a favorite of mine, this style is not flattering and I do not like the color and weight of the denim. It reminds me of what the polygamist women were wearing in Texas! (just a little shorter)

Diesel jeans are known for their out-of-this-world advertising, but I like how they took that idea and created a really cool ad. This is from their 2008 campaign, but I thought you might enjoy it. This ad appeals to both men and women - there aren't a lot of fashion ads that do, or do it well.

And I guess it's possible this could be the future, right? Hopefully Diesel will still be around making their durable and always stylish denim!

Known for her dressed-down, simplistic style, it's no wonder why Jennifer Aniston is a denim style icon.

She understands how to make a pair of jeans look perfect with a simple tank and a jacket, or a button down top. She also understands how the jean should fit her body and since she is quite short, she gets them tailored to the perfect length (which is a common mistake most of us make - not tailoring our jeans).

Another style tip from Jen we should note: wear a belt! Belts haven't been at the height of the fashion trends lately, but notice in all of the photos Jen is wearing a belt. It can add a lot to your look, and it helps with the fit.

Are you having flashbacks?! Many of you might recognize this style from your high school days, and some of you have only seen 80's movies to witness this great fashion. Pretty bad, huh? (but the fringe is awesome!) Whether you like it or not, the 80's are coming back and the fashions that have survived that decade are gracing our runways.

As it is with all fashion inspired by the past, they have updated the trend, and yet I don't know how I feel about the re-emerging acid wash jean. Balmain does it best, there is no question about that, but would you wear those jeans? I think I might if they were done just right. (I personally like the jeans on the far right)

It's the debate of the century! Or not. But it is something we all ask ourselves when buying denim - why are designer jeans so expensive? Why don't I just buy some jeans that look like designer jeans for a lot less?

So the battle begins: Discount Denim VS. Designer Denim

In the left side of the ring we have the Forever 21 jeans that are only $12.50!
In the right side of the ring we have the 575 jeans from CitizenBlues that are only $75.00 (Regularly $198).

So what's the difference? Can you see it? They differ in 3 areas: Quality, Style, and Fit.

QUALITY: The Forever 21 jeans are made of Cotton and stretch material just like the 575's but the quality of cotton and weight of denim is not the same. Also, the stretch material they use is not the same grade. As you wear and wash your Forever 21 jeans they will lose their shape and elasticity much quicker than the 575 jeans.

STYLE: The 575 jeans have contrast stitching, a better, more dense wash, and have fine finishing touches. Most designer denim companies have hand-stitched details whereas discount jeans do not.

FIT: Designer jeans, such as the 575 jeans, are tailor-made. Hours and hours go into getting the right fit. Every designer jean has different "tricks" to their fit such as pockets that give a lifting effect, or a slimmer fit in the leg to make thighs appear trimmer. Designer jeans overall fit much better and maintain their fit wash after wash. Discount denim makers have a few basic styles they use over and over again. They make their jeans for the masses and therefore you lose the "tailor-made" look and feel.

So it comes down to this. You can buy basic looking $12.50 jeans every 4-6 months or you can buy original and great-fitting $75 jeans every 2-3 years.
